Tribute & Message From The Family

Howard Stephenson, 95, of Zeeland went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 12, 2021.

He was born November 17, 1925, in Zeeland, to John and Christina (Hoeve) Stephenson. He graduated from Zeeland High School and served his country during WWII. Howard served in the U.S. Army 75th Infantry, including the Battle of the Bulge. Howard worked in the family business Stephenson Construction until 1971, then worked at FMB until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of North Street Christian Reformed Church. Howard was also an active community member and served on the Zeeland City Council, and Zeeland Board of Public Works.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Craig Stephenson in 1985, and his wife of 68 years, Myrl Jean Stephenson in 2015, and his siblings: Alvin, Hazel Sterken, John Jr., and Harold.

He is survived by his children: Michael (Donna), Christy (James Lytle), Bradley (Linda) and Ann (David) Geenen; his grandchildren: Brian Stephenson, Nathan (Alison) Ruch, Jordan (Patricia) Ruch, Emily (Jonathan) Helder, and Miriam Geenen; ten great grandchildren; his sister Maxine (Ed) Jousma, sisters-in-law: Lois "Babe" DeWeerdt Johnson, Elaine Boes, and many extended family.

A private family graveside service with military honors will be held at Zeeland Cemetery, with Rev. Mark Stephenson officiating. A celebration of Howard's life will be held in September at North Street CRC. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland.

Condolence & Memory Journal

It was a delight to have known Howard during his years at Royal Park Place. I remember coordinating a night of sharing for him and other veterans who had been on an Honor Flight to Washington DC and hearing about his time in the service for which I am deeply grateful. In one of our last visits, Howard was telling me about some relatives of his who are buried in Bentheim Cemetery. I grew up in Bentheim and we found we knew many people in common. He was a wonderful person and my deepest sympathies are extended to his family and loved ones. Chaplain Cindy Nyhoff, Royal Park Place

My deepest sympathy to you and your family as you mourn the passing of your father and grandfather. I was privileged to share devotions with Howard in a most creative way! What a tender soul he was. May the prayers of others serve as a safety net of hope and comfort, and may you be filled with joy as you embrace the promise that Howard is filled with joy in the presence of his Savior.
